Is Jesus’ forgiveness promised for all sins, or are some sins unforgivable by God?

Are All My Sins Forgiven or Are Some Unforgivable by God?

It is the question that causes more sleepless nights for sincere seekers than any other: Is
my sin too great for God?
When we feel the weight of our failures, it is natural to worry
that we have crossed some invisible line and that God’s grace has finally run out.

The Bible’s teaching on God’s forgiveness is absolute and complete: Jesus’ forgiveness is
promised for all sins—past, present, and future. While there is mention of one
“unforgivable sin” (often called the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit), Scriptural clarity
shows that this is not a mistake you make accidentally or in a moment of weakness. If
you are worried that you have committed this sin, you almost certainly haven’t.

The message of hope is that Christ’s sacrifice covers every single sin, completely and
perfectly. As Scripture assures us in 1 John 1:7, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the
light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us
from all sin.”

The Good News: Why Forgiveness is Guaranteed for All
Sins

Our assurance does not rest on our own performance, but on the nature of God’s promise.
We have not become righteous, made ourselves righteous, or promised to be righteous in
the future to earn this. Rather, we are declared righteous through justification by grace
alone, through faith in Christ.

This is the bedrock of our faith, supported by Ephesians 2:8-9: “For by grace you have
been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result
of works, so that no one may boast.” Furthermore, Romans 5:1 confirms, “Therefore, since
we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Christ’s Sacrifice Was Not Only As Man, But As God

Forgiveness is a transaction accomplished entirely by God for you, not something you
earn. The Greek word Jesus cried out on the cross, Tetelestai (“It is finished”), literally
means “paid in full”.

Why is this payment sufficient for the sins of the whole world? Because Christ’s divinity
makes his sacrifice infinitely valuable. As John the Baptist proclaimed in John 1:29,
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”

Christ took man’s place to reconcile the world back to God the Father. 2 Corinthians 5:19
and 21
explains this divine exchange clearly: “that is, in Christ God was reconciling the
world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them… For our sake he made him
to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

The Law vs. The Gospel: The Source of Your Fear

The fear of unforgivable sin often stems from confusing the Law and the Gospel. The Law
tells you what you must do—require perfect obedience—and shows you that you have
failed, which leads to despair. The Gospel, however, points you only to Christ and assures
you that He fulfilled the Law for you, leading to certainty.

Think of it this way: The Law is the mirror that shows you the dirt on your face; the Gospel
is the towel that wipes it away. The mirror does not clean you; it only reveals the problem.
Only the Gospel cleanses.

Understanding the Single “Unforgivable Sin” and Final ABJECT Rejection

What the Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit Truly Is

The “unforgivable sin” mentioned in Matthew 12:31 is not a sudden act of anger, a stray
thought, or an overwhelming mistake. It is a persistent, deliberate, and final rejection of
the Holy Spirit’s work.

The Holy Spirit’s job is to bring the forgiveness won by Christ to us. Therefore, to
blaspheme the Spirit means to knowingly, willingly, and maliciously call God’s truth a lie
(John 14:6) and refuse to ever repent or believe the Gospel.

This is a perpetual state of resistance, not a momentary stumble. If you are worried that
you have committed this sin, the very fact that you are worried shows that the Holy Spirit
is still working on you. A person who has truly rejected the Spirit would have no conscience
or concern regarding their standing with God.

If You are Afraid, You are Forgiven

The desire to know if you are forgiven is proof that you haven’t committed the
unforgivable sin. If you had, you would not care. Your hope is not based on your flickering
feelings, but on God’s objective promises in His Word.

Rest in the promise of Jeremiah 31:34: “For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember
their sin no more.

Finding Assurance: Where is God’s Promise Located?

We nurture Christians through media with the goal of spreading the Word of God. But
where can you go right now to find this assurance?

In the Clear Teaching of God’s Holy Word

God’s promise of forgiveness is external to you (extra nos). You hear it, read it, and believe
it. It does not bubble up from within your emotions; it comes from outside of you. We
bring God’s Holy Word directly to you through our media channels to ensure you hear this
message clearly.

In the Sacraments (Baptism and the Lord’s Supper)

God has given us visible signs as concrete guarantees of forgiveness. Forgiveness is not
just an abstract idea; God attached it to water, bread, and wine.

In the sacrament of Baptism, God’s Word promises in Acts 2:38, “Repent and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Likewise, regarding the Lord’s Supper, Jesus said when consecrating the elements in
Matthew 26:28, “for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the
forgiveness of sins.

In the Word of Absolution

Finally, there is great comfort in hearing a pastor declare the forgiveness of sins, citing
Christ’s authority.

The pastor’s authority to offer Christ’s forgiveness comes directly from Jesus. In John
20:23
, Jesus breathed on His disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the
sins of any, they are forgiven them…”

What a joy to know that Christ’s forgiveness offered by the pastor is as valid and certain
as if Christ offered it Himself.
